Release notes up to 1.9.0.171

1.9.0.171 27 Jul 2025

  • Fixes the corrected time when the legacy method is chosen (each boat's own implied wind for Performance Curve Scoring).

1.9.0.162 9 May 2025

  • More country-specific scoring options.

1.9.0.152 11 Jan 2025

  • The 4-knot wind speed.

1.9.0.148 17 Oct 2024

Weather-routing time correction factors (TCFs), which ORC provides to the race organiser, can be used in scoring:

  • As custom ToD and ToT. "Import TCFs" in the event window puts them in the fleet's Custom ToD and Custom ToT columns. A race uses them with the scoring method ToD-Custom or ToT-Custom.
  • As weather routing. "Import TCFs" in the race window puts them in the race's ToD and ToT columns. Score the race with ToD-Weather Routing or ToT-Weather Routing.
Important: choosing any other scoring method and clicking Score writes over the imported factors. To go back to weather routing, import them again.

1.9.0.130 23 Feb 2024

  • More 2024 scoring options.

1.9.0.126 19 Jan 2024

  • The 24-knot wind speed.

  • Minor improvements and fixes.

1.8.0.73 31 Jan 2019

  • Results can be published on ORC's servers, free of charge, by any registered Sailor Services user. Enter your Sailor Services sign-in in "ORC Sailor Services Setup" (File menu), then click "Upload and publish results". The public link to the results appears below the button, for the organiser to share. Upload as often as the regatta needs. The race data also help ORC's research on the VPP and on scoring.
  • RRS A9: race scores in a series longer than a regatta.
  • Multi-class finish: finish times for several races in one list, without changing race windows, for boats of different classes finishing at the same time. In "Classes & Races", mark one race of each class with "select for multi-class finish", then click "multi-class finish". Type in Search to find a boat (by the list's sort column, sail number at first), enter its finish time and keep it with the tick button or F12; F5 takes the computer's clock. Enter moves on to the finish type, and again back to Search. Save (Ctrl+S) often. To score, close the window and open the races from "Classes & Races".
  • Various fixes and improvements.

1.7.0.43 22 Feb 2018

  • Courses are shown and edited in a grid, with buttons for the legs' data.
  • Single-number ToT and ToD scratch sheets.
  • High-point scoring in classes.
  • The finish code TLE (Time Limit Expired), scored as the last boat's points plus 1.
  • Any number of time limit formulas ("time limits setup" in classes).
  • A class setting for how Performance Curve Scoring works out corrected times: with a fixed wind, the winner's implied wind (the default), or with each boat's own implied wind.
  • "Add" has a drop-down (its arrow) with "Online", which downloads boats' data from ORC's server by rating office.
  • Characters that can't be in a file name (\ : * and others) become underscores in report file names.

1.6.0.35 26 Jul 2017

  • The scratch sheet is in the race window, with the handicaps of the race's course.
  • Series results: one HTML file per class and division.
  • Entry lists and time limits: one HTML file per class.
  • Enter moves to the next boat while finish times are typed.

1.5.0.31 22 Jun 2017

  • A "Delay" column in race results: the difference from the winner's corrected time.
  • A revised tie-break.
  • Minor changes and fixes.

1.4.0.27 2 Mar 2017

  • The first release.
Quick start: scoring a race
  1. The event. Open the ORC Scorer and choose File, New Event. Name the event and save it to a file: an event (a regatta, a championship, or a single race on a weekend) is one file, with its ratings, entries, races and results.
  2. Classes. In "Classes & Races", add the classes of the notice of race with the + button. The Class Id identifies a class and can't be changed later. Apply with the tick button. A class can be split into divisions (the Divisions list under the class); division results are taken from the class's points, or worked out separately, as "Extract division points from overall" says.
  3. Fleet. "Add" adds boats from an RMS file of ratings or, with "Online" under its arrow, straight from ORC's server. Double-click the boats of "Unselected Boats" to select them (sort by a column title; type in "Search unselected" to narrow the list), then click OK. Set each boat's Class Id, and Division Id if there are divisions, and click Save. Bow numbers, skippers and other details are typed in the grid or in the pane beside it. Shift-click column titles to sort by several.
  4. Courses. The "Courses" tab holds the courses of Performance Curve Scoring. For each leg enter its distance, then either set the predefined curve to None and enter the leg's bearing and the true wind direction, or choose a predefined curve (windward-leeward, ocean, triangle, circular, non-spinnaker). A wind speed entered for every leg fixes the wind instead of the boats' implied wind.
  5. Races. In "Classes & Races", "New Race" opens a race of the selected class. Enter its name and start time and choose the scoring; for Performance Curve Scoring choose the course too. Enter the finish times: the finish becomes OK, or choose DNF, DNS and the rest; a penalty is a percentage of places in the penalty column. Click Save, then Score, for corrected times, places and points. Results shows the race results in your browser, to print or to put on the event's website; Scratch shows the time allowances of the scoring chosen.
  6. Series and time limits. In the event window, Results works out each class's series points and places, with the entry list and the time limits. A class's time limit is a formula in "Classes & Races", with names such as GPH, OSN, ILCWA (ToT inshore), CTOD and CTOT (custom ToD and ToT). For a 15-mile race at GPH times 1.5: GPH * 15 * 1.5 (a dot for decimals).
  7. Print setup. Up to three logos on every report, and the columns of each report.

IMS Editor

Edit a boat's data file on your own computer: hull, rig, sails, inventory and propeller, with the checks the VPP needs, drawings of the boat and its sails, and printouts. Download a boat's data file from My Boats, change it in the IMS Editor, and upload it back to request a test certificate.

Release notes up to 18.0.0.56

18.0.0.56

  • The checkstays field.
  • Improvements to the data sheet.
  • Various minor fixes and improvements.

17.0.0.51 8 Feb 2024

  • Class, designer, builder and measurer take up to 50 characters, and the certificate number up to 20.
  • The measurer's e-mail address in the editor.
  • New checks: measured freeboards together with a club displacement; PLM under 2000.
  • The adjustable mast foot.
  • "Mast material" (aluminium, carbon, wood) replaces the carbon mast field.
  • The mainsail furler is a choice: No, In mast, In boom.
  • Various minor fixes and improvements.

16.0.0.48 13 Jan 2023

  • The skeg, a new kind of appendage.
  • Strip codes: 1 for the root strip, 2 for an appendage retracted. Every appendage needs a root strip; in offset files without one, the first strip is taken as the root. With the retracted code the fraction field is no longer needed; it stays for a while.
  • More offset file checks, against VPP failures and wrong results.
  • A check of PD against the rule's range.
  • The rotating mast, in the editor and on the certificate.
  • CEXT 0.50 becomes 0.25, flagged and shown on the certificate as "Loose lifelines", so that CEXT can change by itself in the future.
  • Various minor fixes and improvements.
Earlier versions, 15.1.0.46 to 1.10.1.0

15.1.0.46 5 May 2022

  • Full support for quadrilateral sails.
  • Minor improvements and fixes.

15.0.0.44 23 Feb 2022

  • The offset editor handles offset 2.0 appendages.
  • A new inventory, its items normalised and classed as ballast, liquid tanks and other. Existing data move over by themselves, and water ballast tanks go to the ballast, as movable.
  • New fields: WPL (whisker pole length) and hydro generator.
  • "Measured freeboards" among the club options confirms that the freeboards were measured (otherwise they count as not measured); club certificates show FA and FF only then.
  • Print shows the data printout in the program's own browser, to save it, or e-mail it with the data file.
  • Various improvements and fixes.

14.0.0.40 13 Feb 2021

  • SPL (spinnaker pole length) changes by itself under the 2021 rules.
  • An alternative foretriangle for flying headsails, used for now only for the minimum area of those not hoisted at ISP or tacked at TPS. Enter the foretriangle's Id in the headsail's FTId column; 0 means the standard ISP and TPS.
  • Minor changes and fixes.

13.0.0.38 31 Jan 2020

  • Fixes in the boat drawing.
  • Obsolete fields removed: forward accommodation, taper hollows, jumper struts, SPS, BAL, BWT. "No backstay" moves below "Transom graphic", since it changes the drawing, not the rating. CPW moves to the Super Yacht tab.
  • Renamed as the rule names them: Runners/Checkstays; Non-circular rigging (was lenticular); Woven polyester sails (was Dacron).
  • FSD, the luff groove device as actually measured, replaces FSP (which is FSD times two). FSP still shows, disabled and struck out; existing files are converted by themselves.
  • The total weight of the ballast shows in the measurement inventory.
  • Important: a headsail's "Flying" is a choice. No: set on the forestay. Yes: set flying, tacked at TPS. Inner: set flying aft of the forestay, as staysails are; the VPP treats it as a headsail on the forestay.
  • The certificate type includes the Super Yacht types (Measured, Declared, Corinthian), which replace "Data source" and "Corinthian certificate" on the Super Yacht tab. Existing Super Yacht files are converted; set the type yourself in new ones.
  • Minor changes and fixes.

12.0.0.29 9 Jan 2019

  • Measurements are always rounded up when they have more decimals than needed: 4.552 for HLP becomes 4.56, as sails are measured in centimetres.
  • Fixes in the boat drawing.
  • New 2019 fields: asymmetric spinnakers on the centreline only, and boom inclining.
  • New propeller codes.
  • Minor changes and fixes.

11.0.0.27 21 Feb 2018

  • Fixes an "Access violation" that "Show Additional Data" could give.

11.0.0.26 3 Jan 2018

  • A second address field in the rating office's administration tab.
  • HHW in the boat drawing.
  • An offset file viewer.

10.0.0.23 31 Jan 2017

  • The mainsail weight (MSW), an obsolete measurement, is struck out where it is still in the data.
  • The E-Mail label is a button that writes to the owner with your mail program; the Owner label copies the owner's name and address.
  • A tab for Super Yacht data.

9.0.0.20 6 Feb 2016

  • Boom inclining, with a new option on the inclining test page and in the printouts.
  • Sail measurement abbreviations as in the Universal Measurement System, in data entry and printouts.
  • Minor fixes.

8.0.0.19 22 Feb 2015

  • The mizzen and mizzen staysail are in the sails inventory, with their drawings; existing mizzen data move over by themselves.
  • The folding three-blade propeller.
  • Water ballast is described by its tanks, on the "canting keel & water ballast" tab and with the measurement inventory; the double inclining data and WBV are gone (existing WBV values become a tank), with a check against a negative tank TCG.
  • An additional comments field of any length in the rating office's administration tab.

7.0.0.16 10 Feb 2014

  • Headsails can be flagged as set flying and as battened. Spinnakers that qualify as Code Zeros move to the headsails, flagged as flying, sized to 94% of their area as spinnakers; a flying headsail can no longer be entered as an asymmetric spinnaker.
  • Up to 11 headsails, by measured area, on the International certificate's second page.
  • When JH is zero it is taken as 5% of LPG, as the International Technical Committee decided.
  • CPW, SPS, BAL and BWT are obsolete and shown in grey.
  • New fields and options: "Shaft not exposed" propellers, woven polyester sails for International boats, light stanchions, double keel bulbs, two phone numbers for the rating office; and a check that PBW is under 0.25 × PRD for a solid propeller.

6.1.0.15 9 Feb 2013

  • A printout of the whole sails inventory.
  • Minor changes and fixes.

6.0.0.14 22 Jan 2013

  • Weight deduction. From 2013 boats are measured in lightship condition. So that the existing fleet needs no remeasurement, the weights of the inventory's deductible items (anchor, chain, tools, deck gear, forward items, liquid tanks) are taken off the displacement, with their positions, whatever the certificate type. With no such items, and a flotation date before 2013 or none, 1% of the displacement is deducted. Nothing needs to be changed by hand.
  • The mainsail weight (MSW) is no longer required.
  • Non-manual power is a choice: rig only, sheets only, yes (both), no.
  • The craft identification number (CIN).
  • Units conversion, a compare tool, and buttons to clear a sail type or the whole inventory.
  • Some minor fixes.

5.0.0.11 and 5.1.0.12 2012

  • Drawings of the jibs, genoas, spinnakers and mainsail.
  • No limit to the number of active sails; the certificate shows the largest of each kind that fit.
  • VCG in the measurement inventory, and the deductible weights worked out from it.
  • More checks of the measurements.

2.1.0.2 to 4.0.0.7 2009 to 2011

  • The XML data file format (.dxt); the owner's e-mail; SPN worked out from the sails inventory.
  • Dynamic Stability System measurements, the propeller's PIPA, validation of data files, the rule's paragraph in each field's tip.
  • Lenticular rigging, the articulated bowsprit, and the mainsail furler.

1.10.1.0 to 1.23.0.45 to 2008

  • The first versions, for the earlier .dat files: measurement printouts and the measurement input form, sail areas, and the boat drawing.
Tips for the IMS Editor
  • Backups. Every save keeps a copy of the file before it, beside it, with the extension .dbk001 to .dbk999.
  • Registered as editor. Options, "Registered as Editor" makes the IMS Editor the program that opens data files: double-click one, or open one you downloaded. Untick it to undo.
  • Merge. Brings chosen groups of fields from another data file into the open one. Only fields that hold something are taken (a 0 is not blank). Merged fields show in bold, and in the sails and inventory on a grey background. Revert undoes a merge until you save; after that, use the backup copy.
  • Printing. The data print as the second page of the ORC International certificate; the measurement form, to fill in by hand, is in the File menu.
  • Keyboard. Every button has a shortcut, shown in its tip. Ctrl+Page Up and Ctrl+Page Down move between pages; Alt and a page's underlined letter go to it. In the sails and inventory grids, the arrows move, Enter goes to the next field, Down past the last row or Insert adds one, Ctrl+Delete deletes one, and F2 edits a field without clearing it.
  • "Field Sail Id must have a value". A new sail needs its Id, in the first column. A row added by mistake can simply be deleted.
  • A new version. Options, "Check for new version". Behind a proxy, give the program the same settings as your browser.

Installing

  1. Download

Sign in, then click Download. Your browser keeps the installer in your downloads folder.

  2. Run the installer

Open it from your downloads (Ctrl+J shows them in most browsers), and follow the steps on screen.

  3. Keep it up to date

The ORC Scorer tells you when a new version is out. In the IMS Editor, choose Options, "Check for new version".

Both programs are free. Each download is recorded with your account.
